There has been sustained research and academic interest in Hong Kong in the United Kingdom for many decades, with an initial peak in publications by UK-based academics around the 1997 transfer of sovereignty. Hong Kong-related research was generally treated as part of Chinese Studies, and efforts to institutionalise Hong Kong Studies as a distinct field only began in the 2010s.
This is a brief overview of key events and developments that have raised the profile of Hong Kong-focused research and contributed to the institutionalisation of Hong Kong Studies in the UK.
